Introduction: The Challenge of Thinking Together
In a world marked by uncertainty and polarization, the ability to think clearly together is more crucial—and more challenging—than ever. David Bohm warned of the dangers of muddled thinking:
“Pervasive incoherence in the process of human thought is the essential cause of the endless crises affecting mankind.”
As facilitators, our role is to cut through the noise and guide groups toward clarity and shared understanding. But how do we do that effectively?
Intentionality as a Facilitation Tool
Clear thinking requires intentionality—a deliberate focus on what is real, observable, and shared.
Technology of Participation (ToP) methods provide a roadmap for:
- Grounding discussions in observable reality, not assumptions.
- Connecting ideas to lived experiences, making them more relatable.
- Building collective clarity that drives meaningful action.
Grounded in Reality: The ORID Method
Bohm reminds us that our perceptions are often colored by personal needs, fears, and desires. To counter this, ToP’s Focused Conversation Method (ORID) begins with the objective level—focusing first on what we can see and hear, not what we assume:
- Objective: What do we actually observe?
- Reflective: What personal reactions arise from this?
- Interpretive: What insights can we draw together?
- Decisional: What actions should follow from our shared understanding?
This method anchors discussions in reality, helping groups move past biases and engage in coherent, collective thought.
Intentionality in Action: Planning for the Future
Intentional focus isn’t just for the present—it’s crucial for envisioning the future.

Final Reflection
In times of division and distraction, intentional focus helps us ground our conversations in reality and shared experience. It’s a practice that builds trust, fosters clarity, and creates space for authentic dialogue.

Thought for the Day:
“When the world feels overwhelming, focus on what you can shape—your presence, your conversations, your choices. Intentional Focus reminds us that clarity and agency start within, allowing us to navigate complexity with purpose and care.”
